It was announced on
April 25 that Andrea Peterson, who teaches music at Monte Cristo Elementary
School in Granite Falls, was named the National Teacher of the Year. Peterson,
who was featured on the cover and in the March issue of Voice, traveled
to Washington, D.C., to be honored at an event in the White House Rose Garden.
Traveling to the nation’s capital with her were her parents, husband and
four-week-old daughter. She credits her father, who taught for almost 40 years,
as her inspiration and example.
According to an
article in the Seattle Times, Andrea said as she travels the nation over the
next year as an ambassador for her profession, she’ll tell everyone who listens
to her that teaching is about more than just the WASL and other standardized
testing, that it’s about recognizing students’ growth and finding ways to
connect with their lives.
“Music isn’t a
subsidiary subject in Granite Falls. It’s part of everything we do,” said
Superintendent Joel Thaut.
Washington
Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson said she was thrilled that
an arts educator was recognized for the national honor. She said, “Andrea will
bring a new focus to the critical importance of arts education. She offers a
perfect example of how the arts can be an integral part of learning.”
