Job Description
Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra (BIYO) has two orchestras: the Sinfonietta and Orchestra. The ages for the two groups have varied according to need, ability, and individual maturity with children in the Sinfonietta generally 3rd-7th grade and those in the Orchestra 8th -12th grade.
Created in fall, 2001, the goal of the BIYO is to promote the technical and musical development of young instrumental players, and give them the opportunity to play together in an ensemble setting. Most students take private lessons, but for many, the BIYO is their first experience playing in a large ensemble.
Expectations
• This is a part-time, independent contractor, position with primary work responsibilities from September to May with preparation work often done during summer months.
• Rehearsals will be on Mondays from 5:00 – 8:30pm. For the past three years, rehearsals have been held at the Island Music Center. (1.5 hours with each group with a small break between sessions)
• Concerts have been at various locations including Island Church, BHS Commons, and Bethany Lutheran Church.
Responsibilities
• Conduct all rehearsals and concerts
• Select repertoire and plan music purchases.
• Put bowings and fingerings in students’ parts or delegate that task
• Work with Librarian to manage the library. Keep up to date the electronic data base of titles/composers/instrumentation/performance history. Pass out and collect music as needed.
• Audition prospective participants.
• Determine schedule for rehearsals and concerts in collaboration with BIYO Operations Manager
• Assist Operations Manager with recruitment.
• Assist Registrar in finalizing of registrations.
• Participate in community outreach activities such as School Concerts, Christmas in the Country, Ferry performances, Orchestra Festival in Bellingham, and Library Patron Party
• Determine seating policy. Seat participants according to policy.
• Allocate resources responsibly to stay within budget
• Attend BIYO board meetings approximately twice a year, and the BIYO Board Retreat.
• Communicate with BIYO Operations Manager on regular basis
• Oversee selection of sectional and ensemble coaches, supervise their activities and items of focus.
• Oversee rehearsal and concert venue set-up
• Retain and keep handy student emergency contact info and field trip permission slips
• Abide by and enforce the rules and procedures as specified in the BIYO handbook
• Additional tasks as deemed appropriate for this position.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in music or music education, (Master’s degree preferred), with expertise in stringed instruments
• Proven musicianship in performing or conducting. Experience with ages 8 – 21.
• 2+ years of experience teaching, conducting, particularly with elementary age students preferred
• Ability to successfully lead and direct a large student ensemble both on and off the podium
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with BIYO Board, BIYO musicians and their parents
• Ability to nurture, encourage, and show patience to these young musicians and their parents
• Successful completion of background check
